Tucked away in the heart of Higashiyama, at 347 Gionmachi Kitagawa, this cozy restaurant offers a delightful and authentic experience for those looking to indulge in expertly prepared cuts of meat.

One of the standout items on their menu is the ロースのかいわれ巻き (roast beef with daikon sprouts), which combines tender, juicy beef with a refreshing crunch from the sprouts. For those who prefer a more savory bite, the ハラミのタレ焼き (grilled skirt steak with sauce) is a must-try. It's packed with flavor and perfectly grilled to bring out the natural juiciness of the meat.

Another item worth mentioning is the ミノ刺し (beef tripe sashimi), a delicacy for the adventurous eater. What customers say?

“ We visited Kyoto's "Ansan"! This renowned meat restaurant offers delicious tongue sashimi, heart sashimi, top blade sashimi, and boiled tripe! The tongue is crunchy with sweet soy sauce, the heart is vibrant with garlic, and the Omi beef yukhoe is exquisite with its yolk! The tripe is refreshingly clean with pickled plum. The stewed tail is superb, with the potatoes melting into the rich soup! Located in a back alley in Gion, the restaurant's red lantern-lined vermilion counter creates a lively, homey atmosphere. We were soothed by the young chef's skill with his knife and the warmth of a family-run business. We toasted with shochu amidst the bustling crowd of regulars and tourists! A long-established restaurant where reservations are required, this luxurious moment adorns Kyoto's nightlife. We'll definitely be back! ”

“ Niku Kappo Ansan Yassan In Kyoto, where beef culture is deeply rooted, there's no other restaurant more revered than Ansan (Yassan). Located in the drinking district north of Gion, this long-established restaurant was founded in 1948. Temporary location open until January 2025. Renovations completed on September 27th, marking my first visit in a year. The interior design remains almost the same, with seismic reinforcement work and other work adding to the calm atmosphere. This is a must-visit restaurant when I visit Kyoto! Mainly a family-run business run by three generations of a family! The meat is incredibly fresh and everything is delicious! ”

“ I came here without knowing anything about the restaurant's rules, but they kindly explained everything to me and I had a great time. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere and service were fantastic. ”

“ I was completely satisfied with the raw course, grilled tripe, and stew. It was delicious, but the grilled meat was also delicious. I guess the price has gone up recently, so that's why I gave it this rating. But it was delicious. ”

“ I came here once over 10 years ago, and I couldn't forget how impressed I was back then, so I went back again! I was 13th in line, with 12 people waiting, about 50 minutes before opening. The first dish was a cucumber appetizer. The last time I visited, I also started with sashimi. I came here to eat that sashimi, so I was drinking beer and looking forward to it... The sight of the beautifully colored beef tongue being butchered right in front of my eyes was truly impressive. And then the beef tongue sashimi was served with sweet soy sauce! It was from the base of the tongue, with just the right amount of fat, and it looked absolutely beautiful! Yes. So delicious! That's what I wanted to eat. And then the beef heart sashimi! Delicious! I was already very satisfied up to this point. Afterwards, I had sirloin sprouts wrapped around it, oxtail, grilled skirt steak, and other dishes that were all very delicious. However, a customer, probably Korean?, was taking pictures of the sashimi, and I told him not to. I was scared when he got angry and said, "No, I'm not going to eat it!" Thank you for the meal. ”

“ If you don’t speak Japanese, it’s difficult to eat in this place, there’s no menu, but you constantly need to pick items from the options the owner offers. Otherwise the food is delicious, beef sashimi especially. It’s also pricy, and you won’t know how much each item costs, you will be immersed in authentic Japanese cuisine and dining experience. Again, if you don’t speak the language, it can be challenging and feels unwelcoming. ”

“ My senior treated me to a meal. He had reserved a small room in the back, and it was amusing to see him glaring at me with envy from the counter seats. The food was simply amazing. Thank you very much. My senior told me not to take photos of the food, so I refrained. Apparently there are conditions for reserving a small room, and it's not easy to get one. ”

“ This restaurant is a true gem, standing as a testament to family tradition. It's been around for decades and is lovingly run by a grandmother, her daughter, grandson, and granddaughter. I had one of the most uniquely memorable dining experiences of my life here. The restaurant operates in an omakase style, meaning they serve dish by dish, They begin with sashimi-style raw beef. If you're unfamiliar with or hesitant about raw meat, this might not be the best choice. However, we thoroughly enjoyed it; the quality of the meat and the preparation process were pure art and dedication. To truly appreciate the experience, familiarity with Japanese culture and language is definitely recommended, as it's the whole experience, not just the food, that makes this place so unique. We lived in Japan before, so it was not an issue for us but it might not be as straightforward for everyone if you do not speak Japanese. I noticed that most of the customers are regulars, and the staff treats them like family. Even though it was our first time, they were super friendly. They came over to talk to us and kindly answered any questions we had. We visited in the afternoon and then returned before 6 PM, and they were kind enough to accommodate us for dinner that same day. We truly appreciated the experience, the food, and their friendship; it was a highlight of our trip. I highly highly recommend this restaurant, they deserve it. I look forward to visiting again. ”
